Hwange National Park is situated in close proximity to Victoria Falls and is Zimbabwe’s largest and most visited national park. It boasts of having the largest population of the largest mammal on earth, the African Elephant which makes them a very common sighting. There are numerous big five creatures within the park. Lions are frequently spotted, and buffaloes are also plentiful, but seeing one is not always a guarantee, and sighting a rhino is always a bonus. Leopards and cheetahs are also available in the park but they are really difficult to spot because of the patrol areas that go beyond the boundaries of concessions. Wild dogs and hyenas typically travel great distances each day in large packs, but once you come across them, they offer memorable and incredible photographic opportunities.
The park is home to approximately 400 different birds, including southern ground hornbill, carmine bee-eater, and racket-tailer roller, just to mention a few. There’s always a number of young animals, including impalas, that are between one and two months old around the park. There are sixty man-made watering holes that provide much-needed water during the dry winter times when everything dries up. These serve as hunting grounds for lions and points that animals have to visit frequently. There are elevated wooden platforms that serve as an observation deck where wildlife and birds can be viewed. Once in the park depending on your time you can visit the painter dog conservation site, where you can buy exquisitely crafted animals made from recycled impounded trappers’ snares as well as a variety of endangered birds.
Although there are possibilities to lodge in the park, a two to three-hour drive with one of our experienced guides should give you plenty of experience to watch game. Around 11 am and continuing into the afternoon until sundown is typically the best time to view game. Early dawn would be preferable, though this would depend on the guides’ advice if it’s lion breeding season.
Bring sunscreen because the weather is fairly dry and hot even in winter, but also bring warm clothing if you plan to stay an extended period of time because the evenings can get chilly. The greatest time to come is in the winter, and we recommend going from early May through July so that you can also witness the Victoria Falls when it's closest to its peak before the really dry months begin.
It is also very easy to see animals approaching from a distance during the winter, and one feature that makes it a unique experience is that it is never overrun by people, making it feel more or less like a private experience. You can get more information about the many lodging options within the park or arrange a day excursion by getting in touch with us. You won't be disappointed because the experience at Hwange is truly superior to all other experiences in Africa. Don’t forget to bring your camera and binoculars if you can, and take the time to capture pictures whenever you can since the abundance of wildlife will astound you.
